If you’re just getting started on the road to great skin, you know that a solid skincare routine is essential to success. What a lot of people don’t know is that there is such a thing as a morning and nighttime skincare routine. While it can be an overwhelming concept at the start, the benefits make a night-and-day difference (pun intended). Your beauty sleep is important, but doing even just one of the following steps before climbing into bed will transform your morning glow.

  1. Remove Your Makeup

Please, for the love of skin, remove your makeup before you fall asleep! Not only does leaving makeup on clog your pores, but it can also be the cause of premature aging. We totally understand how tempting it is to crawl straight under the sheets after a long day out on the town, but removing your makeup will save your skin in the long run.

  1. Cleanse Your Face

During the day, your skin is vulnerable to oils and dirt buildup– especially when makeup is in the picture. Washing your face and exfoliating as a part of your nighttime skincare routine can prevent you from waking up with acne. Isn’t that the goal? It also keeps excess gunk away from your sheets, so you can maintain that clean girl aesthetic all night long. 

  1. Use a Moisturizer

Washing your face can naturally cause your skin to lose its natural moisture. We also lose more water content in our skin while we sleep, leaving our skin parched in the nighttime. Don’t feel like you need to purchase a special nighttime moiosturizer, though. Your daytime product will work just fine! 

  1. Use a Silk Pillowcase

If you sleep on your side or stomach, the average cotton pillow can absorb enough moisture to leave your skin dry. It will even absorb the oils from your hair, which can cause acne if it reaches the skin. Not ideal or sanitary sounding, we know. A silk pillow case, though, is a skincare holy grail. Silk is non-absorbent and hypoallergenic, which means it won’t collect dust or bacteria. This option gives your skin the best chance to stay clean and clear throughout the night. 

  1. Sleep on Your Back

If a silk pillowcase doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, sleeping on your back could help keep acne at a minimum. Compressing your face against the pillow makes your skin more susceptible to wrinkles. And while a silk pillowcase reduces the chances of fine lines, sleeping on your back will negate the risk entirely. The elevation also prevents eyebags by keeping the fluids from pooling under your eyes. A win-win!
