New season, new skincare tips! Master the good vibes and glowy energy with these summer skincare tips.
Summer is here, but it comes with baggage -- oil, sweat, and sunburns. We all know the drill. But, don’t worry because we’re sharing some must-know info to leave that baggage behind. Your skin has different needs in the warmer months to continue to glow, stay clear, and prevent sun damage. That’s why these summer skincare tips are crucial for a stress-free season. After implementing our five hacks below, your skin will thank us and you.
Tip #1: SPF is a No Brainer
We know you know this, but SPF should be a constant as the last step in your skincare routine year-round. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a power of at least 30 on all exposed skin (yes, including your body). If you’re going to be out and about in the sun, set a reminder to reapply every two hours.
When applying (and reapplying), it’s a good rule of thumb to use a shot glass amount of sunscreen for head-to-toe coverage. However, if you’re going to be wearing makeup on your face, we recommend finding a lightweight spray or powder SPF to avoid smearing. Understand the assignment and wear SPF for the rest of your life.
Tip #2: Less is More
Summer can make every product feel like 5lbs, especially if you’re lucky enough to live in a place with humidity (*sigh*). A simple solution to this heavy problem is switching to lightweight creams and serums, and water-based products.
If you’re someone who loves a rich moisturizer and doesn’t want to risk parting ways or trying new, we recommend compromising and only using this product at night. Trust us, this is with your skin’s best interest in mind. To really keep your summer cool and casual, pack a facial spray to refresh your skin throughout the day. And between us, only bring it out if you’re ready to share. People love a cold mist on a hot, sunny day.
Tip #3: Exfoliating Never Goes Out of Style
@OilySkinHavers, this tip is especially for you! Make time to exfoliate at least 2x a week if you have oily skin, and at least 1x a week if you have dry skin. Always, always follow up with a moisturizer once you’re done (and this goes for both parties).
Exfoliating helps to remove build-up and unclog pores to prevent acne and breakouts. You can do this with physical exfoliants, like silicone brushes for cleanser, resurfacing masks, or serums. Whichever is best for your skin is the best option for you.
Tip #4: Over-Showering is a Thing
We know you sweat every time you leave the house. Summer has a funny way of doing that to us. But, over-showering, especially in hot water, can cause your skin to get dryer than usual. Try not to shower more than you usually do, and if an unnecessarily sweaty day calls for it, cold water is your best bet.
If you are going to enjoy the beach, pool, or preferred activity to get your daily dose of sun exposure, please don’t forget to moisturize afterward. Your skin will need it and as an added bonus, it will give you that extra glow. Who doesn’t want that?
Tip #5: A Happy Body Means Happy Skin
Staying hydrated is step one to a happy body. Health experts recommend drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water on an average day, but even more during the dead heat of the summer. Although we’re sure you’ve heard YouTubers claim that their secret to clear skin is drinking lots of water, it isn’t that simple.
Drinking water directly impacts our internal health, which will, in turn, impact our skin health. This isn’t to say that water intake will automatically make you look more youthful, but it plays a significant role in overall body wellness. Stay beautiful, stay hydrated, stay healthy.
Get your game face on, it’s time to have a hot skin summer. With our tips above, you’re sure to look good and feel even better. Cheers to having a little fun in the sun!
