Coming home after a 9-5 job to a 10-step skincare routine can be daunting-- and might we say-- unrealistic. We’d hate for you to feel guilty about not having the time or energy to take care of your skin.

Because in reality, we get it. If you’re looking for the fuss-free, bare minimum to maintain your skin’s health, this is the read for you. Let’s get down to the basics of this simple skincare routine.

Step 1: Cleanse your Skin

First thing’s first, wash your face! Rumor has it that your pillowcase actually captures and contains dirt and bacteria from your hair, clothes, open window, etc. We’re all guilty of occasionally coming home after a long night and crashing into bed without a shower.

This is why it’s important to not only wash your pillowcase often, but also wash your face in the morning to start the day and before bed to reset. Find a gentle cleanser that gets you excited for a fresh face twice a day.

Step 2: Treat your Skin

This is when we welcome serums (the heavy lifters) into our simple skincare routine. A serum is a highly-concentrated shot of nutrients, hydration, and active ingredients. It should be used after a cleanser to really work its magic on clean, awake pores.

Whether you need to target dullness, dryness, or blemishes, this step is a MUST. There’s a serum for almost every skin concern possible, so don’t give up until you find your go-to. The best part? They’re often multi-benefit products too. We love a 5 in 1.

Step 3: Moisturize your Skin

Moisturizer should be your right-hand man. The formula is designed to hydrate and soften your skin all while keeping it plump and comfortable. The serum used in step two can help lock in the hydration, but it does not give surface level hydration. This is why your moisturizer is the more important piece of this puzzle in order to ensure your skin has the moisture it needs.

This year-round product should be used by all skin types. Yes, even the oilest of skin needs moisturizer too! Oftentimes, oily skin types feel the need to dry their skin out, but this actually convinces your skin to produce more oil. A little reverse psychology our skin likes to play on us.

Step 4: Protect your Skin

Last but not least, you absolutely need to cover your skin in SPF (not just in makeup products) before you leave the house. Kapeesh? The sun is responsible for 90% of skin’s aging. That’s why it’s critical for the sake of your older self to use an SPF with a power of 30-50 every single day. Starting now! Apply it 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply at least every two hours for the utmost protection.

Not only do you need a good SPF that works with your skin, but it needs to be broad spectrum to protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. You’ll find that a lot of sunscreen products only protect the surface of your skin against UVB rays. UVB rays are the culprit behind those vacation sunburns that force you to spend the following day inside, coated in aloe vera. We want to also protect you against UVA rays, which is what leads to premature aging. That’s why broad spectrum SPF is the only answer.

Let’s recap. Use this simple skincare routine list to shop products based on your skin type:
